The Clairlea Howl

The Howl is coming, The Howl is coming chanted the kids of Clairlea.
It’s almost Friday oh what a sight the kids were jumping with Glee.
All sorts of plans to rush home from school and come back dressed in disguise
Only to see your classroom or 3 transformed before your eyes.
It’s a 5:30 start so be here to craft, play games and mill about
And don’t forget to go upstairs, as the library guarantees a shout
Collect your candy from room to room with the bag you bring from home
With map in hand you’ll guide your way wherever you choose to roam
Paint your Face, Toss a Loonie, touch a worm or shoot a puck
Find your fortune, Guess the candy, pull a lolly, try your luck
Be ready, it’s great when we start the debate which costume is best in the land
The Judging is led by Mr. McGilvray of course with prizes in hand.
So much to do, so much to see when you come to the Howl at Clairlea.
Whatever you do, whatever you see and wherever you choose to prowl

Please be sure to take the time and visit us at the HOWL!

Things we are working on….

French Immersion Pathway…
If you have children attending Clairlea P.S. that are in French immersion you are also aware that our French Immersion home school pathway after grade 8 is Cedarbrae Collegiate. It has come to our attention over the years through opinions voiced at school council meetings, emails and varied conversations with parents that Cedarbrae was not the preferred choice for a multitude of reasons. In an effort to voice the concerns of the Clairlea Families we as a council with the help and guidance of Parthi Kandavel our School Trustee have escalated our concerns to the appropriate areas within the TDSB. Due to this effort in early April we were granted a tremendous opportunity to meet and present our concerns to the Chief Planning Officer and Teaching and Learning Department of the TDSB. These are the areas of the TDSB that analyze and decide school pathways. The meeting was deemed a success in the sense that we as a council felt heard and they acknowledged our concerns. We also gained a great understanding of how decisions such as changing a pathway of a school is determined and how complex a process it is. In order for this to happen a Feasibility Study has to be conducted by the board. This process can take up to two months as understandably there are many factors to consider. The good news that I would like to share with you is that the planning department has officially identified Clairlea as being in need of a feasibility study and their aim is to have it completed by mid October 2017. If the results of the feasibility study show that our pathway should change given the concerns we have raised in addition to a buildup of French Immersion grade schools in the area west of Victoria Park which will need a high school to attend as well given that Malvern, Agincourt, and Leaside are at overcapacity and not accepting entries and therefore a new High School in the area would need to take on a new stream of French Immersion. That high school would be East York Collegiate. We are cautiously optimistic that our French Immersion home school pathway will change effective for the grade 9 students starting in September 2018 to East York Collegiate. I will provide further updates as I learn them in the months to come.

Message from the Chair

Dear Clairlea Families….

The Clairlea Funfair is less than a month away!  We hope to see everyone there on Thursday June 16th from 5:30-8:30pm.  Bring your neighbours, friends and family all are welcome.  All revenue earned from the Clairlea Funfair will go towards purchasing outdoor sports equipment for Clairlea grades JK to grade 8.  Please see below how you can help to make the Funfair a Success.  Email us at Clairleacouncil@gmail.com.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!!!

MISC…
Thank you to all families that donated items/money to go towards the raffle baskets for the school concert last week.  Unfortunately we didn’t receive enough to support the creation of a basket by the deadline so we decided to hold over the donations and they will be used to create baskets for the Clairlea Funfair.

Clairlea Spirit Wear…
All Clairlea Spirit Wear has been distributed with the exception of a few items that will be coming in the next week.  We experienced a delay in the process because to ensure accuracy we fit each child individually to ensure that items ordered were the correct size because exchanges are not an option.    Once the child was fitted the parent was contacted for approval.  We received a lot of feedback that parents were grateful for the size check and there were a lot of changed sizes but it did lengthen the process to enable fitting hundreds of garments.  To ensure a speedy process going forward a new plan has been devised for next year whereby there will be specific fitting days allocated on evenings and weekends whereby if you plan to order spirit wear you can come to the allocated fitting day(s) and place your order.  This will ensure a quick turnaround going forward.  Thank you for your patience and we hope you enjoy your spirit wear.

Pizza Lunch…
Pizza Lunch has been a tremendous success twice a month for the last three months.  We will continue to have pizza lunch the 2nd Wednesday and the last Wednesday for the month of June.

School Council Meeting:
We will have our last school council meeting of the year tonight as there will not be a June meeting. Please see below the agenda for tonight as well as the minutes from the last meeting.

Message from the Chair

DEAR CLAIRLEA FAMILIES…
Just a little over a month until March break and then it is a short jaunt until the end of the school year.  There is a lot going on in that short time frame and I’ve listed a few of the key things for you below.  As always if you have questions you can reach us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com.

CLAIRLEA SPIRIT WEAR….
The spirit wear order forms came home last Friday.  Please have a look through as we have some new items this year.  The deadline to submit your order is Friday February 12th.   We will not be able to accept any late orders.  To avoid any sizing issues we have a full set of sample sizes in the office and you are welcome to come and take a look at the products.  Once you submit your order along with payment we will then size your child and contact you with the suggested size to confirm the order.  Please ensure that you complete the order form clearly so that all the contact details and amounts are legible.  If you did not receive the order form I have attached one for your reference and there are extra forms in the office.  All payments are to be in exact cash or cheques made out to “Clairlea School Council”.

POPCORN FRIDAY…(Friday February 19th)
We are trying something new.  Starting on Friday February 19th we will be selling Kernels flavoured popcorn for $2.00/per 20 ounce bag.  Look for us at lunch time in front of the main office.  The flavours available to purchase for the month of February are buttered or white cheddar.  These Kernels popcorn products are gluten and nut free.

PIZZA LUNCH…..
Due to the huge popularity of the Pizza lunch program we have decided to make pizza lunch available twice a month starting in March as a trial for three months.  Starting in March pizza lunch will take place the second Wednesday in addition to the usual time which is the last Wednesday of each month.   The prices for pizza lunch have stayed the same but the envelopes to order will look different.  You will now get one envelope for the month.  This means you will place your order once a month and it will include both dates for pizza lunch for that month.  You will pay for both pizza lunches for the month within the one envelope.  The new pizza lunch dates will be as follows:
Pizza Lunch Dates:
March Wednesday 9th & Wednesday 30th
April Wednesday 13th & Wednesday 27th
May Wednesday 11th & Wednesday 25th
PIZZA LUNCH FAQ’S
1. What if my child only wants pizza lunch once a month?
Answer: Simply fill out the envelope as you usually would and check off which date you would like the lunch to arrive.  If you don’t indicate which date you want the pizza your child will receive it on the first pizza date of that month as a default.

2. Have the prices changed?
Answer: No, for 2 slices a snack and drink is still $5 and for 3 slices a snack and drink is still $6.  The only difference is you will put in double the normal amount if you want pizza on both days in the month. For example if you normally buy 2 slices, snack and drink and you want lunch on both days that month you will pay $10.

3. Can I decide later if I want lunch on the second date of that month?
No, you will need to place your order for the month when the envelopes are due.

If you have further pizza lunch questions please email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com

FUN FAIR 2016….
Save the date for this year’s fun fair on Thursday June 16th.  We hope to see you there and if you are able to volunteer or have items to donate please email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com.  Also we are looking for suggestions of what the money raised from the fun fair should go towards.  Please send in your suggestions.

WHAT'S COMING UP.....

PIZZA LUNCH… (MONEY ORDER ENVELOPES ARE DUE THIS THURSDAY JANUARY 21ST) Pizza lunch will take place on Wednesday January 27th.  Please note this is NOT when the pizza lunch envelope orders are due.  Due to the large volume of pizza that needs to be ordered for the school we need to place the order a few days prior to the actual pizza lunch date.  That means if a child submits their order late there is a risk that your child may not receive pizza because they would not have been part of the original order.  Please make an effort to submit your orders on time as per the date on the envelope and not on the date of the actual pizza lunch, as well please take a moment to carefully fill out the form.  From time to time we do receive orders with missing information.  If there is information lacking on your order we will default to 2 cheese slices and apple juice.

MOVIE NIGHT…   (JANUARY 29TH)  Our first movie of 2016 is “HOME”.   The movie will take place in the gym on Friday January 29th at 7:00pm sharp.  Entrance is $2 per person (child or adult) and the movie is available to children grade six and under.  Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for sale during the movie.  We encourage children to come in pajamas and bring blankets and pillows if they like and get comfortable in the gym for a fun family night.

CLAIRLEA FUNFAIR…(COMING IN JUNE 2016) I know it’s cold outside and it’s hard to imagine it but we have started to plan the Clairlea Funfair.  If you want to volunteer to be a part of this big event and have ideas please email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com.   What do you think we should do with the funds raised from this years Funfair?

CLAIRLEA SPIRIT WEAR….(coming in February 2016)  Stay tuned for the order forms coming out in February.  New exciting items coming.

WHAT'S COMING UP.....

NORCARD AND STEEPED TEA CATALOG…  (DUE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22nd)  There are a few days left for our Norcard and Steeped Tea fundraiser.  This shopping calendar came home in the backpacks a few weeks ago and you are able to order calendars, greeting cards, stationary items, jewelry, tea and much more just in time for the holiday season.  Items will arrive approximately the first week of December 2014 (perhaps sooner).  All money (cash or cheque) and order forms (with completed legible contact information and order details) must be returned to your classroom teacher no later than WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22ND 2014.   Cheques must be made payable to “Clairlea School Council”.  Late orders will not be accepted and will be returned back to you.

PIZZA LUNCH… (DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 24th) The pizza lunch program is well under way and we are coming up on our second pizza lunch installment which will take place on Wednesday October 29th. If there is information lacking on your order we will default to 2 cheese slices and water.
**This month you would have received two pizza order envelopes.  Please note one of them is for the regular monthly pizza lunch and the other is if you want to pre order a pizza dinner for the Halloween Howl fundraiser event on October 30th

SPIRIT WEAR… (DUE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29th) You should have received a copy of the spirit wear order form.  Extra copies are always in the office if you haven’t received it.  We have a quick turnaround time on the orders so that they can be back in time for the holidays.  All orders are due no later than Wednesday October 29th.  Late orders will not be accepted.  As in previous years we have sample sizes in the office that will be available until October 29th, if you would like your child to try on a specific item.  Also you can email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com if you want us to fit your child.  We recommend that you have your child fitted.  Please ensure you complete all the necessary areas on the form clearly.  (See order form here).

HALLOWEEN HOWL… (THURSDAY OCTOBER 30TH FROM 5:30-8:30PM) The team is working hard putting together the upcoming Clairlea Halloween Howl Fundraiser.  Please save the date and bring the children out for a spooky fun time on Thursday October 30th from 5:30-8:30pm.  We encourage the children to dress up in their favourite costume so that they can participate in the contest at the end of the evening!  We are an ECO Platinum School so we ask you to hang on to the flyer/map that was sent home with all the details of the night and bring it with you to the Howl to help navigate.  (See map and station legend).   Also please bring your own loot bag/recycle bag to the Howl to enable the kids to collect all their goodies.  Entry is only $5.00/per child and we are offering the option of a pizza dinner during the event but we need to know in advance if you are having the dinner so we ensure there is enough.  Make things easier on yourself and leave the dinner to us and you just need to enjoy the event and pick up your dinner in the gym anytime between 6:00-8:00pm on the night.  Hand in your Halloween Howl Pizza Order by Friday October 24th.  Help our fundraiser be a success!  All funds raised from the Halloween Howl will go towards “Experiential Learning” in your child’s class.  This will either be in the form of a class trip or an event brought in to your child’s class.  We need your help and I have listed below ways you can help make the Halloween Howl a great success!

Halloween Howl Pre-order Dinner:
Cheese slice $2.00/ea.
Pepperoni slice $2.00/ea.
Water Bottle $1.00/ea.
Apple Juice Box $0.50/ea.

PARENTS YOUR HELP IS NEEDED PLEASE TO MAKE THE HOWL A SUCCESS.....

1.        DECORATION DROP OFF: We need Halloween decorations to get the school ready for the Halloween Howl!! There is a large blue bin in front of the main office of the school where you can drop off all items.  Spend $5 dollars in the dollar store and drop it off in the bin.  We are looking for:
-  Spider Webs – many of these
-  Black
plastic dollar store Table Cloths – many of these
-  Candy Lollipops for the Lollipop Pull Room
-  Lots of Candy (nut free) to hand out or in small jars or baggies

2.       PERSONAL AND/OR CORPORATE DONTATIONS:  We are always looking for gift donations that we can use as prizes or raffles during the Halloween Howl.  If you or your company would like to donate a prize or gift to be used as one of our prizes during the event please contact us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com.

3.       HOME MADE CANDY JARS/BAGS:  We need many candy jars to be used as prizes for the Lollipop Pull room.  You can help by filling any sized jar or little baggy with (nut free) candy and bring it to the school office anytime between now and the Halloween Howl.  The more jars we have the longer this room will be able to stay open and it is definitely one of the favourite rooms.  In past years we have needed approximately 400 jars/bags to have this room open for the entire event.  Feel free to decorate your jars as well.

4.       HALLOWEEN CANDY:  We need peanut free Halloween candy to be used as prizes in various rooms.  Please pick up a bag of candy and drop it off in the blue bin in front of the main office.

MOVIE NIGHT…   (NOVEMBER 21ST)  We are pleased to announce that we have scheduled our first movie night of the year and we will be featuring “How To Train Your Dragon 2”.  The movie will take place in the gym on Friday November 21st at 7:00pm sharp.

DID YOU KNOW…
1.       The most common item in the lost and found is a sweater or a lunch bag.  Having a label on your child’s belongings makes it much easier to find it in the lost and found!
2.       It is illegal as well as a safety hazard to park on Rosalind Crescent at anytime – even for just a few seconds to pick up your child!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?….
1. A proposal will be put forth regarding pizza lunch for the month of June.  The pizza lunch program runs for 9 months from September until May.  Then as a special offer to schools Pizza Pizza then provides the school with pizza for the month of June for free equal to the average amount that was spent from month to month throughout the school year.  We are proposing that the School Council top up the amount and provide free pizza to the entire school for anyone that wants it for the June Pizza Lunch.  What do you think?

2. Parents Reaching Out grants – Please view the link and bring any suggestions or questions to the April meeting.  Application deadline is May 21.   http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/parents/reaching.HTML

SPIRIT WEAR…
The spirit wear campaign was a success and all the items have been distributed to the classes.  Please remember to preserve the size and limit shrinking it is suggested that all items are washed first with like colours, with no bleach and air dry the first time.   If you have ordered a water bottle please label it prior to use.  We have started a new fundraising campaign with Mabel's labels and we will be providing labels for the water bottles for those that require it.  We will send out an email once the labels arrive.  Please also label all your spirit wear clothing in an effort to keep it out of the lost and found.  If you order labels through our personalized Clairlea Mabel’s Labels website we will receive a percentage of the profits.  The Mabel’s Labels fundraising campaign is open today until the end of the school year.  The website to place your order is:  http://www.clairlea.mabelslabels.com/

Chair's update

A message from School Council chair Irit Hartman:

Dear Clairlea Families,

I hope that you are having a safe and happy March Break.  There are a few things coming up that I've listed below.  Please find attached the minutes and treasurer's report from our last council meeting in February. [click here for attachments - draft minutes & treasurer's report]

Next Council Meeting:
Our next meeting will be held on Wed March 20th at 7pm.  Please see the agenda below.  A couple of things to note for March's meeting: I was contacted by Councillor Michelle Berardinetti's (Ward 35 Scarborough Southwest) asking if she could attend our March meeting as she wanted to see how we are doing and answer any questions or concerns that any of you may have.  So if you have questions or you just want to meet her please come out to the meeting.  She will be there at 7pm.  The agenda listed below may change to reflect a question and answer period at the beginning of the meeting with the councillor and the remaining items will be pushed back respectively.  Secondly to all of you that ordered frozen cookie dough it will be ready for pickup at 7pm at the meeting.  As we do not the facilities to store a large amount of frozen goods please ensure that you or that you've arranged for someone to pick up on your behalf at the school on March 20th at 7pm.  Any items that have not been picked up on the night will be eaten :)

As a side note: I will not be in attendance for the March meeting as I will be away but I leave you in the capable hands of our Vice Chair Christina Auger who will be running the meeting as well as the rest of the council executive.

March School Council Meeting Agenda:
6:45 – 7:00pm - Selling 50/50 tickets to be drawn at the end of the meeting (optional)
7:00 – 7:10pm - Introduction and voting in the past minutes (Christina)
7:10 – 7:35pm - Administration Report (Mr. Mcgilvray and Ms. Harroun)
7:35 – 7:45pm - Treasurer’s Report (Tina)
7:45 – 7:55pm - Fundraising Report (Karen)
7:55 – 8:25pm - Open Discussion (All)
8:25 – 8:30pm - 50/50 draw and wrap up (Christina)

Spirit Wear:
The spirit wear orders have been sent in and are being completed as you read this email.  We expect the orders to come in at the end of March.  I'm sorry but no more late orders will be accepted.

Thank you to everyone that provided feedback on the pizza lunch suggestions for the next year.  The consensus seems to be at this point that once a month is enough or at most twice a month.  We will also continue to look into other avenues for healthy food choices available in the school in addition to the pizza days.  Keep the ideas and suggestions coming.

Best Regards,

Irit

Message from the Chair

Below is a message from Irit Hartman, chair of the Clairlea School Council. Most of you will have received this by email - if you didn't, and would like to be on the email list, please write to clairleacouncil@gmail.com.

DEAR CLAIRLEA FAMILIES….
We are half way through the school year and we have some exciting things coming up to tell you about.  Please have a look through the information below and feel free to contact us with any questions or suggestions.  Happy New Year!

COOKIE DOUGH…
Check the backpacks for our spring catalogue featuring a variety of frozen cookie dough flavours.  Complete and submit your order form no later than February 25th.  All cheques should be made payable to “Clairlea School Council”.  Orders will arrive on Wednesday March 20th and must be picked up at the school from 7:00pm – 9:00pm only - during the School Council Meeting.  Due to the fact that the cookie dough is frozen it must be picked up and will not be sent home in backpacks.  Please ensure that you specify the name and phone number of the parent that will be picking up your order on the order form.  Orders cannot be stored at the school due to space issues.

SPIRIT WEAR…
Keep an eye out for our new spirit wear order forms coming home in backpacks in the next couple of weeks.  A hint of what you will see:
T-shirt, hoodies (zipped and pullover), baseball caps and metal water bottles (to support the ECO School initiative) all at reasonable prices.  To ensure you get the right fit sample sizes will be made available and fitting days will be arranged.  (Stay tuned!)

FUNDSCRIP (Fundscrip.com):
We are excited to start a new campaign called Fundscrip.  This campaign entails a wide variety of gift cards from over a hundred retailers that you can purchase from.  Each retailer has a predetermined percentage that Fundscrip will send to Clairlea School based on the amount of your gift card at no cost to you.
For example:  If you shop at No Frills  you can purchase a gift card for $50.00 (or select a different amount) via fundscrip.com and Fundscrip will send Clairlea School a predetermined percentage of your total gift card amount, which for No Frills is 3% at no cost to you and you will receive a $50 gift card to use when you shop.  Each retailer has a different percentage and there are featured monthly specials whereby each month a few selected retailers will have a higher percentage for the month.
The idea is to just buy gift cards for retailers where you would normally shop anyway and instead of paying via credit card or cash just use the gift cards and benefit the school with the predetermined percentage.  If you are looking for gift cards for presents this is the place to be.
Please see attached for a full list of over 100 retailers, such as; Build a Bear, Canadian Tire, Chapters, Cineplex, Giant Tiger, Gap, No Frills, Esso, Harvey's, Home Depot, Homesense, Jack Astor's, The keg, Loblaws, Metro, Old Navy, Petsmart, Pizza Pizza, Rona, Rogers, Roots, Sears, Shoppers Drug Mart, Starbucks, Subway, Swiss Chalet, The Bay, The Childrens Place, Blue Jays, Toys R Us, Wendy's, Zellers and Winners just to list a few.

How to Sign up (It’s free):
Step 1: Go to www.fundscrip.com or just click on this link: https://www.fundscrip.com/Sign-Up.aspx?IID=MGBJSW
Step 2: Select “Sign Up Here”
Step 3:  Complete the “Sign up Form” by entering your name, email address, postal code, and password (make one up), our Clairlea school “invitation code” is MGBJSW (not case sensitive)
Step 4: Select “Sign Up”
Step 5: Check your email and click on the link in the email from fundscrip to activate the account
Step 6: Click on “Buy Cards” to go shopping

Once you have selected your cards you have two different shipping options to choose from:
1.       Ship Home – this means that the cards that you ordered will ship to the address you specify whether it is your home address or the address of the recipient you choose.  When using this option the gift cards will ship approximately 3 days after your order is placed.  You will also be charged a shipping cost up to approximately $7.00.
2.       Ship to School (Fundraising Chair – Karen Shah) – this means that the cards that you ordered will ship to Clairlea and will be available on the designated pick up dates listed below.  Each month we will have a deadline for all orders coming to the school and on the order deadline all existing orders in the system will be processed and shipped to the school.  We will then have a pick up date which will be at the monthly School Council Meeting at the school.  All orders that are not picked up on the pickup date will be sent home with your child on the following day.  You will not incur a shipping charge using this option although you will have to adhere to the schedule below:

PIZZA LUNCH:
We will be adding a new “Gluten Free” option to the pizza lunch order forms.  This addition will be available for the next pizza lunch on Wednesday February 27th.
SOME CHANGES COMING UP!!!
We know that pizza lunch is a big hit with the kids and the parents.  Personally I look forward to the one day a month that I don’t have to decide what to make the kids for lunch.  We were thinking of expanding the pizza lunch for the next school year to once a week, starting in the fall of 2013.  That would mean that each month you would get an envelope sent home and you would select which weeks for that month your child will be having pizza lunch (All, none or somewhere in between) and you would put in the payment for the month in the envelope.  Also we would eliminate the snack and drink and just provide the pizza.  The rationale behind this would be to make it easier logistically to distribute the pizza lunch and also to support our ECO School by encouraging children to utilize reusable water bottles for their lunch and encourage healthy snacks to be supplied from home.  Let us know what you think about this and send us your feedback.

MOVIE NIGHT:
Our next movie night will be on Friday March 8th featuring “Wreck-It Ralph”.

NEXT CLAIRLEA COUNCIL MEETING:  Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday February 20th @ 7pm until 8:30pm.   Free child minding is available and all are welcome!

FEBRUARY 2013 AGENDA:
