Halloween Howl this Thursday - message from the chair

Dear Clairlea Families….

Are you looking forward to the Halloween Howl coming up this Thursday October 30th from 5:30-8:30pm.  It’s $5 per child and adults are free.  Come out and see your favourite teacher dressed up.  Don’t make dinner take the night off and have dinner at the Howl.  If you have preordered your dinner we will have it ready for you to pick up from 6:00-8:00pm in the gym.

ALL FUNDS RAISED FROM THE HALLOWEEN HOWL WILL GO TOWARDS “EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING’ IN YOUR CHILD’S CLASS.  THIS WILL EITHER BE IN THE FORM OF A CLASS TRIP OR AN EVENT BROUGHT INTO YOUR CHILD’S CLASS.  PLEASE SEE BELOW HOW YOU CAN HELP MAKE THE HALLOWEEN HOWL A SUCCESS!

PARENTS YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO MAKE THE HOWL A SUCCESS.....

1.        DECORATION DROP OFF: We need Halloween decorations to get the school ready for the Halloween Howl!! There is a large blue bin in front of the main office of the school where you can drop off all items.  Spend $5 dollars in the dollar store or Party City and drop it off in the bin.  We are looking for:
-  Spider Webs – many of these
-  Black
plastic dollar store Table Cloths – many of these
-  Candy Lollipops for the Lollipop Pull Room
-  Lots of Candy (nut free) to hand out or in small jars or baggies
- Police tape or caution tape (Dollar store or Party City)

2.       PERSONAL AND/OR CORPORATE DONTATIONS:  We are always looking for gift donations that we can use as prizes or raffles during the Halloween Howl.  If you or your company would like to donate a prize or gift to be used as one of our prizes during the event please contact us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com.

3.       HOME MADE CANDY JARS/BAGS:  We need many candy jars to be used as prizes for the Lollipop Pull room.  You can help by filling any sized jar or little baggy with (nut free) candy and bring it to the school office anytime between now and the Halloween Howl.  The more jars we have the longer this room will be able to stay open and it is definitely one of the favourite rooms.  In past years we have needed approximately 400 jars/bags to have this room open for the entire event.  Feel free to decorate your jars as well.

4.       HALLOWEEN CANDY:  We need peanut free Halloween candy to be used as prizes in various rooms.  Please pick up a bag of candy and drop it off in the blue bin in front of the main office.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE HOWL??

Loonie Toss: Bring your loonies and take a shot.  The person who throws their loonie closest to the prize gets to take it home at the end of the night.  You can try as many times as you like.  Only $1 each try.

Lollipop Pull:  An oldie but a goodie!  For only a dollar you get 3 chances to find the lollipop with the mark on the end.  If you find it you pick your prize.

Pumpkin Room: Tiny pumpkins all around and you are the artist that can decorate them and then take your creation home with you!

Oragami Room:  Whether you are an expert or a beginner come try your hand at origami and see what you can create.

Harry Potter:  A favourite from the past.  An exciting change this year there will be tastings.  Have you ever tried Butter Beer??

Haunted Library:  Always a thrill from year to year!  Come take a risk and walk through the scary venture if you dare!

Candy Guess: Are you good at guessing candy amounts?  Well take a guess for free and maybe you will walk away will the whole jar!

Grossology:  Take a risk and close your eyes and let your hand feel some gross surprise.  Can you guess what it is?

Fortune Teller:  Well this year we have a special treat in this room.  We have a teacher that will be doing the readings.  Come and see and be surprised!

Face Painting: Ask our experts to transform you into a different character and see if your friends can guess who you are.

Story Time:  Hear a story and colour a Halloween picture.  All good fun!

Craft Room: Who doesn’t love a good craft.  Come create and enjoy and then take your craft home!

***Join our raffle at the front door when you come in for a chance to win a “Raptors” basket.  Raptors tickets and more….

***Get some 50/50 tickets throughout the evening and come to the gym at 8:00pm to see if you win.  The winner has to be there to pick up the prize.

***Do you have the best costume?  Then you must come to the gym at 8:00pm for the costume contest.

***Do you have something you can donate to the new Kindergarten rooms.  Please bring a donation to the Howl and drop it off in the “Kindy Bin”.  Please see this list of items that are needed in the Kindergarten area.

OTHER DATES COMING UP….

SPIRIT WEAR… (DUE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29th) You should have received a copy of the spirit wear order form.  Extra copies are always in the office if you haven’t received it.  We have a quick turnaround time on the orders so that they can be back in time for the holidays.  All orders are due no later than Wednesday October 29th.  Late orders will not be accepted.  As in previous years we have sample sizes in the office that will be available until October 29th, if you would like your child to try on a specific item.  Also you can email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com if you want us to fit your child.  We recommend that you have your child fitted.  Please ensure you complete all the necessary areas on the form clearly.

MOVIE NIGHT…   (NOVEMBER 21ST)  We are pleased to announce that we have scheduled our first movie night of the year and we will be featuring “How To Train Your Dragon 2”.  The movie will take place in the gym on Friday November 21st at 7:00pm sharp.  Entrance is $2 per person (child or adult) and the movie is available to children grade six and under.  Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for sale during the movie.  We encourage children to come in pajamas and bring blankets and pillows if they like and get comfortable in the gym for a fun family night.

DID YOU KNOW…
1.       The most common item in the lost and found is a sweater or a lunch bag.  Having a label on your child’s belongings makes it much easier to find it in the lost and found!
2.       It is illegal as well as a safety hazard to park on Rosalind Crescent at anytime – even for just a few seconds to pick up your child!

From the chair

A message from the School Council chair, Irit Hartman:

Dear Clairlea Families
The school year is well underway and things are getting busy and we as your school council are working hard to put forth a fun year!  I’ve outlined below some key dates coming up as well as where we could use your help for the upcoming HALLOWEEN HOWL FUNDRAISER on Thursday October 30th!  Please have a look through and as always we want to hear your comments so please contact us via clairleacouncil@gmail.com   Other places to look are; The School Council bulletin board located outside the Main Office  and the School Council Blog http://clairleacouncil.blogspot.com to keep up to date of what is going on!

REMINDER…
School Council meetings take place on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  The next school council meeting is on Wednesday November 19th from 7pm-8:30pm. Free child minding is available.  All are welcome and we hope to see you there!

The Agenda for School Council meeting usually follow this format:
6:50 – 7:00pm Sell 50/50 tickets (optional)
7:00 – 7:10pm Introduction and voting in the past minutes (Irit)
7:10 – 7:35pm Administration Report (Mr. Mcgilvray and Ms. Karsh)
7:35 – 7:45pm Treasurer’s Report (Tina)
7:45 – 8:00pm Fundraising Report (Joanne)
8:00 – 8:25pm Open Discussion (All)
8:25 – 8:30pm 50/50 draw

WHAT'S COMING UP.....

NORCARD AND STEEPED TEA CATALOG…  (DUE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22nd)  There are a few days left for our Norcard and Steeped Tea fundraiser.  This shopping calendar came home in the backpacks a few weeks ago and you are able to order calendars, greeting cards, stationary items, jewelry, tea and much more just in time for the holiday season.  Items will arrive approximately the first week of December 2014 (perhaps sooner).  All money (cash or cheque) and order forms (with completed legible contact information and order details) must be returned to your classroom teacher no later than WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22ND 2014.   Cheques must be made payable to “Clairlea School Council”.  Late orders will not be accepted and will be returned back to you.

PIZZA LUNCH… (DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 24th) The pizza lunch program is well under way and we are coming up on our second pizza lunch installment which will take place on Wednesday October 29th.  Please note this is NOT when the pizza lunch envelope orders are due.  Due to the large volume of pizza that needs to be ordered for the school we need to place the order a few days prior to the actual pizza lunch date.  That means if a child submits their order late there is a risk that your child may not receive pizza because they would not have been part of the original order.  Please make an effort to submit your orders on time as per the date on the envelope and not on the date of the actual pizza lunch, as well please take a moment to carefully fill out the form.  From time to time we do receive orders with missing information.  If there is information lacking on your order we will default to 2 cheese slices and water.
**This month you would have received two pizza order envelopes.  Please note one of them is for the regular monthly pizza lunch and the other is if you want to pre order a pizza dinner for the Halloween Howl fundraiser event on October 30th

(See order form here).

HALLOWEEN HOWL… (THURSDAY OCTOBER 30TH FROM 5:30-8:30PM) The team is working hard putting together the upcoming Clairlea Halloween Howl Fundraiser.  Please save the date and bring the children out for a spooky fun time on Thursday October 30th from 5:30-8:30pm.  We encourage the children to dress up in their favourite costume so that they can participate in the contest at the end of the evening!  We are an ECO Platinum School so we ask you to hang on to the flyer/map that was sent home with all the details of the night and bring it with you to the Howl to help navigate.  (See map and station legend).   Also please bring your own loot bag/recycle bag to the Howl to enable the kids to collect all their goodies.  Entry is only $5.00/per child and we are offering the option of a pizza dinner during the event but we need to know in advance if you are having the dinner so we ensure there is enough.  Make things easier on yourself and leave the dinner to us and you just need to enjoy the event and pick up your dinner in the gym anytime between 6:00-8:00pm on the night.  Hand in your Halloween Howl Pizza Order by Friday October 24th.  Help our fundraiser be a success!  All funds raised from the Halloween Howl will go towards “Experiential Learning” in your child’s class.  This will either be in the form of a class trip or an event brought in to your child’s class.  We need your help and I have listed below ways you can help make the Halloween Howl a great success!

Halloween Howl Pre-order Dinner:
Cheese slice $2.00/ea.
Pepperoni slice $2.00/ea.
Water Bottle $1.00/ea.
Apple Juice Box $0.50/ea.

Have a great summer!

Have a great summer!
See you September 2.

Farewell to Mme. Harroun

A very fond farewell to our beloved vice-principal Mme. Harroun, who is leaving Clairlea to take up a new post as principal at a lucky school. Such change is always hard, but we mustn't complain when someone is recognized and promoted for their good work. And isn't it nice to know that someone at the school board is paying attention to these things?

Mme. Harroun, thank you for everything you have done for Clairlea. We have appreciated it greatly.

Thank you for a great evening

Thank you to everyone who came to the fun fair, to all the teachers and parents who volunteered, to the sponsors and especially to the incomparable Irit Hartman, our school council chair, and her hard-working and energetic team of volunteers. I'm sure I speak on behalf of everyone at Clairlea when I say thank you for everything that you do for the school.

A message from the Chair

Below is a message from the School Council chair:

Dear Clairlea Families...

The count down has started, only 5 more school days until the Clairlea Fun Fair is here on Thursday June 19th from 5:30-8:00pm.  Things are coming together and we are looking forward to seeing everyone there enjoying all the fun activities. Over the next week I will be describing the different events and activities that will take place at the Fun Fair.  Please see below for the first group of activities "What is happening inside the school"...

PLEASE HELP:

HELP - LITTLE CANDY JARS:  We are in need of candy jars to be used as prizes for the Lollipop Pull game.  If you could put together one, two or twelve jars and fill them with candy please drop them off at the office anytime from now up until the Fun Fair.  If you don't have jars you can use little bags of candy as well.  Feel free to decorate your jars.

HELP - CAKES: We need cakes for the Cake walk room.  If you are an amatuer baker or of professional caliber we need you to bake a fabulous creation or two and bring it to room 101 on the day of the Fun Fair.  The more cakes we have the longer this room can stay open for fun and the more delicious cakes you can win to take home.  Rember all cakes must be peanut/allergen free.  Please send along a card with your cake to indicate what type of cake it is and any contents we should be aware of.

HELP - THE PRINCESS ROOM:  We need boas, tiaras, sparkly shoes and princess dresses.  Have a look and see what your little princess isn't using anymore or has multiples of and please donate it to the Princess Room for all the Royals to enjoy!!  Drop off any items in the bin in front of the main office from now until the Fun Fair.

HELP - RAFFLE PRIZES: If you have a raffle prize (new product, service or certificate) you or your company would like to donate for the raffle table please contact us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com or drop off the item in the main office marked "raffle item" and we will take it from there.

HELP - VENDOR MARKET SPOT:  Do you have a budding business you want to promote to all of our wonderful Fun Fair attendees.  Purchase a spot in our vendor market for only $15/spot.  Email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com to reserve your spot. Tables and chairs are the responsibility of the Vendor.

WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE THE SCHOOL:
Station A:  The Train Room - Come to room 110 as it will be filled with tracks and trains to play and build.  Watch a video or listen to a story.  If that's not enough make a train craft too!  All good fun for the the train loving child in your life.  The cost to enter this room is 2 tickets per child or show your Fun Pass wristband and come straight in.  Tickets and Fun Passes can be purchased outside at station X.  We ask that parent/guardians stay with the kids in this room as there will be ample picture opportunities.

Station B: The Princess Room - Come to room 109 as it will be filled with dresses, fancy slippers, tiaras and more.  Watch a video or listen to a story.  To finish off the look make a bling ring craft to be the star of the show.  The cost to enter this room is 2 tickets per child or show your Fun Pass wristband and come straight in.  Tickets and Fun Passes can be purchased outside at station X.  We ask that parent/guardians stay with the kids in this room as there will be ample picture opportunities.

Station C: The Rainbow Loom Room - Come to room 112 and be sure to bring your loom for a fun time of creativity.  Our loom experts will help you make some fun stretchy creations.  If you have an extra loom bring it too and share with a friend.  We will supply the elastics.  The cost to enter this room is 2 tickets per child or show your Fun Pass wristband and come straight in.  Tickets and Fun Passes can be purchased outside at station X.

Station D: Bingo - Come to the Staff room and play a round of Bingo and possibly win a prize  The cost to enter this room is $1 or 1 ticket per Bingo sheet.  Try your luck at the age old game.  Tickets are purchased outside at station X.  Fun Passes are not accepted in this room.

Station E: The Cake Walk - Come to room 101 and play a game and win a delicious prize.  How do you play?  Well think of a betty crocker version of musical chairs.  Each person pays a ticket or a dollar to enter the cake round.  The music is played and everyone walks around in a circle.  When the music stops everyone scrambles to find a designated spot.  If you didn't find a spot you are out and it starts again. The music is played and the remaining people walk around and when the music stops, scramble to find a spot and you continue until the last person standing wins the delicious prize of their choice.  Come early so that you can have your choice of cake.  Tickets can be purchsed outside at station X.  Fun Passes are not accepted in this room.   When we run out of cakes that is when the room shuts down.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING:
Volunteer Tea: It is that time of year again the Staff at Clairlea are hosting a Volunteer Tea on Tuesday June 17th from 8:30am - 10:00am in the Staff room.  If you have volunteered for a school trip, helped out in the class, distributed Scholastic items, Counted Pizza money, helped in the library, donated items to the school, worked a movie night, volunteered for the Halloween Howl or any other school event, drove some kids to a trip or event, or just helped behind the scenes, or participated in School Council meetings - this is for you!!   You are invited to this Volunteer Tea in thanks from the Clairea Staff for your time, effort and contributions to help make Clairlea a better place.

Last Pizza Lunch:  We have added one more pizza lunch this year that will take place on Wednesday June 18th.  If you have prepaid for pizza lunch for the year that option ended with May's pizza lunch so if you want Pizza next week you would have to submit your order and payment.  Thank you to all that ordered throughout the year you helped make Pizza lunch a great success.  Next year we will look into providing a milk option with pizza lunch so stay tuned!!

Clairlea Staff Auction Results:  Wow!  This was was a big hit.  We have contacted the winners of each of the 28 activities and are in the process of arranging all the events with the staff.  Once you pay for your activity the teacher/staff member associated with it will then contact the winning child to make arrangements.  We managed to raise close to $1300.00  We will look at doing this again next year.  Thank you to everyone that bid!

Reminder:
There will not be a School Council meeting in June.  We will meet again in September.
