OUR ANNUAL CLAIRLEA HALLOWEEN HOWL EVENT - FRIDAY OCTOBER 27TH 5:30PM-8:30PM

WHAT IS THE HOWL? Bring the family out for a fun time on Friday October 27th from 5:30-8:30pm where many rooms at Clairlea School turn into a fun activity or game.  Entry is only $5.00/per child and parents are free. All ages are welcome.  We encourage all children to dress up in their favourite costume so that they can participate in the costume contest at 6:30pm!  Bring your own loot bag/recycle bag to the Howl so that you can collect all your goodies when traveling from room to room and partake in fun activities – featuring our very popular “HAUNTED LIBRARY” upstairs.  All are welcome so tell your friends, neighbours, family.  You do NOT need to be a student at Clairlea to attend the Howl.
We will be offering the option of a pizza dinner during the event so there is no need to make dinner.  Make things easier on yourself and leave the dinner to us and you just need to enjoy the event and pick up your dinner in the gym from 6:00pm onwards.  This coming week you will receive an email giving you the option to purchase a Halloween Howl Pizza Dinner through the online School Cash system as well as a map will be sent out outlining the activities of the evening.  We prefer that you order you Howl dinner in advance so that we ensure there is enough for all or you can purchase your dinner on the night of the event.

DIELEMAN DFS CATALOG (FORMERLY KNOWN AS NORCARD)…
(ALL ORDERS AND PAYMENTS ARE DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 21st)  Check your backpacks…  Over the last week you would have received the 2016 DFS Catalog.  This shopping catalog is filled with items you can order such as; calendars, greeting cards, stationary items,  jewelry, kitchen items, Home Décor and much more just in time for the holiday season.  The Ordered Items will arrive late November early December 2016.  All money (cash or cheque) and order forms (with completed legible contact information and order details) must be returned to your classroom no later than FRIDAY OCTOBER 21st 2016.   Please make all cheques payable to “Clairlea School Council”.   If you have not received the Catalog or need an additional order form we have left extras in the Main Office.  This fundraiser enables Clairlea to receive up to 50% of all orders made.  Late orders will not be accepted and will be returned back to you.

PIZZA LUNCH…We had our first pizza lunch of the year and despite a couple of hiccups on the part of pizza pizza we were able to service approximately 80% of the classes that submitted pizza envelopes and placed orders and we thank the remaining 20% classes for their patience as they received the second round of pizza within the hour or sooner.   Although we always order the pizzas to be cut in slices of 10 each pizza, in error all pizzas arrived precut in slices of 8 per pizza which entail caused a shortage of over 130 slices of pizza which were promptly reordered and arrived and were distributed within the hour.   The few classes that had a delayed pizza arrival had received their snacks and drinks.
PIZZA REMINDERS:
Each month a Pizza Lunch order envelope will be distributed to each student by their homeroom teacher. This envelope will enable you to order Pizza for one or both Pizza lunch days for that month (the second and last Wednesday of each month).  You can indicate what type of pizza as well as how often you would like your child to have pizza lunch.  If you would like to participate in the Pizza Lunch program, please fill out the envelope order form with the student’s full name, teacher’s name and circle the order you would like along with which days you would like to receive pizza. Please enclose in the envelope the EXACT amount of money or a cheque to pay for the pizza lunch. Cheques should be made payable to “Clairlea School Council”.  Please return the envelope to the teacher by the date indicated at the bottom of the envelope (usually by the Friday before the Pizza Lunch date).  On Pizza Lunch Day (always the second Wednesday and the last Wednesday of the month) your student’s order will be delivered to their classroom by lunchtime!
Before submitting the envelope please take a moment to ensure that the front of the envelope has been completed properly with the students name and they have selected all items (type of pizza and drink).  This will ensure that your child gets what they wanted on Pizza day!
If you have more than one child in the school we ask that you submit a separate envelope for each child that way their order can be processed with their class.  It is ok to pay for multiple children in one envelope and simply submit an empty completed envelope for the other children and just indicate on the empty envelope the name of the child the money was submitted with.
Due to the large volume of pizza that is processed at our school we are required to place the pizza order two days prior to the pizza lunch day so it is important that we receive all envelopes by the deadline to ensure it is included in the order
If at any time you do not receive a pizza lunch envelope you can download it on the Clairlea School Council Blog at www.clairleacouncil.blogspot.com

HOW TO REACH US…
If you would like to be added to the School Council email distribution list please send a request to clairleacouncil@gmail.com.  We would like to hear your feedback and suggestions.  If you are not able to come to the next meeting and want to contribute ideas please email them to us or drop a note in the council box in the office and we can bring them forward to the meeting.    You can contact us via email at clairleacouncil@gmail.com, on the blog at http://clairleacouncil.blogspot.com, or have a look at our bulletin board outside the office for the latest news.

SPIRIT WEAR… (DUE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 29th) You should have received a copy of the spirit wear order form.  Extra copies are always in the office if you haven’t received it.  We have a quick turnaround time on the orders so that they can be back in time for the holidays.  All orders are due no later than Wednesday October 29th.  Late orders will not be accepted.  As in previous years we have sample sizes in the office that will be available until October 29th, if you would like your child to try on a specific item.  Also you can email us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com if you want us to fit your child.  We recommend that you have your child fitted.  Please ensure you complete all the necessary areas on the form clearly.

MOVIE NIGHT…   (NOVEMBER 21ST)  We are pleased to announce that we have scheduled our first movie night of the year and we will be featuring “How To Train Your Dragon 2”.  The movie will take place in the gym on Friday November 21st at 7:00pm sharp.  Entrance is $2 per person (child or adult) and the movie is available to children grade six and under.  Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Popcorn and drinks will be available for sale during the movie.  We encourage children to come in pajamas and bring blankets and pillows if they like and get comfortable in the gym for a fun family night.

DID YOU KNOW…
1.       The most common item in the lost and found is a sweater or a lunch bag.  Having a label on your child’s belongings makes it much easier to find it in the lost and found!

From the chair

A message from the School Council chair, Irit Hartman:

Dear Clairlea Families
The school year is well underway and things are getting busy and we as your school council are working hard to put forth a fun year!  I’ve outlined below some key dates coming up as well as where we could use your help for the upcoming HALLOWEEN HOWL FUNDRAISER on Thursday October 30th!  Please have a look through and as always we want to hear your comments so please contact us via clairleacouncil@gmail.com   Other places to look are; The School Council bulletin board located outside the Main Office  and the School Council Blog http://clairleacouncil.blogspot.com to keep up to date of what is going on!

REMINDER…
School Council meetings take place on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  The next school council meeting is on Wednesday November 19th from 7pm-8:30pm. Free child minding is available.  All are welcome and we hope to see you there!

The Agenda for School Council meeting usually follow this format:
6:50 – 7:00pm Sell 50/50 tickets (optional)
7:00 – 7:10pm Introduction and voting in the past minutes (Irit)
7:10 – 7:35pm Administration Report (Mr. Mcgilvray and Ms. Karsh)
7:35 – 7:45pm Treasurer’s Report (Tina)
7:45 – 8:00pm Fundraising Report (Joanne)
8:00 – 8:25pm Open Discussion (All)
8:25 – 8:30pm 50/50 draw

WHAT'S COMING UP.....

NORCARD AND STEEPED TEA CATALOG…  (DUE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22nd)  There are a few days left for our Norcard and Steeped Tea fundraiser.  This shopping calendar came home in the backpacks a few weeks ago and you are able to order calendars, greeting cards, stationary items, jewelry, tea and much more just in time for the holiday season.  Items will arrive approximately the first week of December 2014 (perhaps sooner).  All money (cash or cheque) and order forms (with completed legible contact information and order details) must be returned to your classroom teacher no later than WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22ND 2014.   Cheques must be made payable to “Clairlea School Council”.  Late orders will not be accepted and will be returned back to you.

PIZZA LUNCH… (DUE FRIDAY OCTOBER 24th) The pizza lunch program is well under way and we are coming up on our second pizza lunch installment which will take place on Wednesday October 29th.  Please note this is NOT when the pizza lunch envelope orders are due.  Due to the large volume of pizza that needs to be ordered for the school we need to place the order a few days prior to the actual pizza lunch date.  That means if a child submits their order late there is a risk that your child may not receive pizza because they would not have been part of the original order.  Please make an effort to submit your orders on time as per the date on the envelope and not on the date of the actual pizza lunch, as well please take a moment to carefully fill out the form.  From time to time we do receive orders with missing information.  If there is information lacking on your order we will default to 2 cheese slices and water.
**This month you would have received two pizza order envelopes.  Please note one of them is for the regular monthly pizza lunch and the other is if you want to pre order a pizza dinner for the Halloween Howl fundraiser event on October 30th

(See order form here).

HALLOWEEN HOWL… (THURSDAY OCTOBER 30TH FROM 5:30-8:30PM) The team is working hard putting together the upcoming Clairlea Halloween Howl Fundraiser.  Please save the date and bring the children out for a spooky fun time on Thursday October 30th from 5:30-8:30pm.  We encourage the children to dress up in their favourite costume so that they can participate in the contest at the end of the evening!  We are an ECO Platinum School so we ask you to hang on to the flyer/map that was sent home with all the details of the night and bring it with you to the Howl to help navigate.  (See map and station legend).   Also please bring your own loot bag/recycle bag to the Howl to enable the kids to collect all their goodies.  Entry is only $5.00/per child and we are offering the option of a pizza dinner during the event but we need to know in advance if you are having the dinner so we ensure there is enough.  Make things easier on yourself and leave the dinner to us and you just need to enjoy the event and pick up your dinner in the gym anytime between 6:00-8:00pm on the night.  Hand in your Halloween Howl Pizza Order by Friday October 24th.  Help our fundraiser be a success!  All funds raised from the Halloween Howl will go towards “Experiential Learning” in your child’s class.  This will either be in the form of a class trip or an event brought in to your child’s class.  We need your help and I have listed below ways you can help make the Halloween Howl a great success!

Halloween Howl Pre-order Dinner:
Cheese slice $2.00/ea.
Pepperoni slice $2.00/ea.
Water Bottle $1.00/ea.

2.       It is illegal as well as a safety hazard to park on Rosalind Crescent at anytime – even for just a few seconds to pick up your child!

Halloween Howl - here's how you can help

The Halloween Howl is on Saturday!

I hope your kids are excited about this as we are. It's great fun for just $5 per person.

It's also one of Clairlea's biggest fundraisers of the year. Funds raised will be used to support extracurricular activities and enrich the learning environment in many ways.

We would be grateful if you can help in any way. Here's what we need:

Halloween stuff. Anything at all! Here are some suggestions --
·        Black plastic dollar-store tablecloths (we need many of these!)
·        Spiderwebs
·        Halloween candy – peanut-free – to be used as prizes in various rooms
·        Styrofoam tombstones
·        Skulls, mice, bats, body parts
·        Twinkle lights (lend us yours – we’ll return them before Halloween!)
·        Corporate donations – for some of the larger prizes e.g. for the loonie toss
·        Candy jars – large and small. If you’re bringing in a large one, please note the number of candies it contains and we’ll use it for the guessing game. We also need many, many small jars or bags of candies to use as prizes for the lollipop pull. We can use up to 400 small bags or jars of candies so please donate as many as you can! These can be left at the office any time before Oct 26 or bring them to the Howl.

We also need adult volunteers for Halloween Howl. We need people for the haunted house, the hockey room and various other jobs including setting up and tearing down the event. Please contact us at clairleacouncil@gmail.com if you can volunteer.

Pizza order forms due Oct 21

At some point this week - maybe today! - you will be receiving not one but two pizza order envelopes.

The tall one is for October's pizza lunch.
You can ignore it if you pre-ordered for the year.

The wide one is for dinner at the Halloween Howl. Use it if you'd like to have pizza for dinner on the night of the Howl. Order for the whole family! We'll also be selling pizza slices the night of the event - subject to availability of course.

Both forms are due back October 21. Cheques payable to Clairlea School Council.

From the School Council chair

A message from Irit Hartman, chair of the Clairlea School Council:

DEAR CLAIRLEA FAMILIES…
We have had a very successful month with respect to fundraising and we have you to thank.  If it were not for the tireless volunteers giving of their time and working behind the scenes as well as the countless donations and contributions from people along with all the students, Clairlea families, Clairlea Staff and Community that support the fundraisers by purchasing, participating and contributing we would not have the successes we’ve had.  Thank you to all!

HERE’S HOW WE ARE DOING SO FAR….

HALLOWEEN HOWL - Thank you to all the families that came to the event we had close to 500 people come through the doors, many with maps in hand!  We raised over $2600.00 in gross revenue and estimate approximately $2000.00 in net profits (still tabulating a few expenses).  We could not have done this if it were not for the generosity of the many volunteers and contributors in the Clairlea community.   We received countless decorations in the drop off bin in front of the office, almost 200 candy jars, wonderful prize donations were given for the Looney Toss room, and many families came to help setup along with dozens of high school students from the community, some of which were Clairlea alumni!  Clairlea grade 7 and 8 students made detailed signs for each event room and others helped setup prior to the event. Thank you to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly in a room during the event or were runners to ensure that everything ran smoothly.   We thank the Clairlea staff for all that you do!   Even the Fire Department heard about the fun and came to see what it was all about! J  We featured some room favourites from the past as well as we tried out some new room themes such as; “Looney Toss” and “Eyeball Bounce”.  We hope you enjoyed your experience!   All Looney Toss winners and candy jar winners have been contacted.

NORCARD WINTER HOLIDAY SEASON CATALOGUE ORDERS Thank you to all of you that placed orders for the Norcard Holiday Season Catalogue Fundraiser.  This campaign is now closed and we have mailed all of your orders to Norcard on November 6th so we hope to have all the items delivered in the next three to four weeks for distribution.   We managed to collect over $3500.00 in product orders of which 50% ($1700+) of it goes to Clairlea School Council.  There is a spring version of this catalogue that we could send out in 2013 – would you be interested? (Post comments below)

PIZZA LUNCH OCTOBER 31STAs per usual the Pizza lunch is a big hit.  Thanks to the hard work of our regular pizza lunch volunteer crew we raised just over $600.00 net profit this month.

QSP MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONSThis fundraising campaign is still going on and will be open all school year long!  If you want to participate in the reward program, which means depending on how many magazines you order you can receive a prize, then you must submit all of your orders in by the deadline which is NOVEMBER 13th.  If you are not interested in the prize rewards the magazine ordering process is open and available all year and you may simply place your order anytime online at www.qsp.ca using our school code which is 9581.

REMINDER…
When sending in cheques for any of the fundraising campaigns the cheques need to be made out to CLAIRLEA SCHOOL COUNCIL.   This is important to help ensure that your cheque is able to be deposited and you are able to receive your desired product.

SO WHAT’S NEXT…

NEXT CLAIRLEA COUNCIL MEETING - Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday November 21st @ 7pm until 8:30pm.   Free child minding is available and all are welcome!  Theminutes and treasurer’s report from the October meeting are attached for yourreference.

NOVEMBER AGENDA: (**note the new items described below)
**6:45 – 7:00pm - Selling 50/50 tickets to be drawn at the end of the meeting
7:00 – 7:10pm - Introduction and voting in the past minutes (Irit)
7:10 – 7:35pm - Administration Report (Mr. Mcgilvray and Ms. Harroun)
7:35 – 7:45pm - Treasurer’s Report (Tina)
7:45 – 7:55pm - Fundraising Report (Karen)
**7:55 – 8:25pm - Open Discussion and Vote (All)
8:25 – 8:30pm - 50/50 draw and wrap up (Irit)

** WHAT DOES THIS MEAN….

WE ARE HAVING A VOTE…
In the next council meeting in the Open Discussion section we will be discussing which categories we would like to allocate funds to for the remainder of the school year.  This will enable us to create a spending plan in order to spend with a purpose.   This in turn will enable us to gear future fundraisers towards something specific.  So come to the meeting with ideas and suggestions as to what the fund allocation categories could be and we will vote.  To start the ball rolling a couple of suggested categories could be:

-          School Improvement Plan (discussed in October’s meeting see minutes attached)
-          Bullying and School Safety

MEMBER OF SCHOOL COUNCIL VS. NON MEMBER OF SCHOOL COUNCIL
In September everyone received a yellow Clairlea School Council self-nomination form that was sent home.  On this form you were given the option as to whether you want to nominate yourself to be a member of school council run for an executive position.  If you chose to nominate yourself as a member of council that means that when we choose to have a vote on any topic, you, as a member will have your vote counted.  As per the bylaws we are required to have 50% plus 1 of the members in attendance for the meetings or a pre determined number for quorum in order to be able to have a vote be deemed valid.  That is why we encourage everyone who is a member to make every effort to attend all council meetings.

If you chose not be a member and just want to attend the meetings, that means that you are welcome and encouraged to come to each meeting and participate fully.  When it comes time for vote only members can partake but members as well as non members can all be present.  Should you still come to the meetings even though you are not a member?  Absolutely, your opinion is important and coming to the meeting and being part of the discussion is always beneficial to all involved.  If you decide that you want to change your mind and become a member of council you are still able to do so as there are some spots left.

I’m not sure if I am a member or not?   Have a look at the attached minutes from the October meeting.  In the top attendance section it will state the “members” that were present as well as the “non members” that were present.  The names that are in the “regrets” section indicate members that were absent from the meeting.

JUST FOR FUN….
We are trying something new and fun for next month whereby we will be selling 50/50 tickets 15 minutes before the meeting starts (@ 6:45pm) until the start of the meeting and the draw will take place at the end of the meeting.  Participation in the draw is optional.

HOW TO REACH US…
If you would like to unsubscribe to this email (we hope you don’t) or know someone that would like to be added to the distribution list please send a request to clairleacouncil@gmail.comWe would like to hear your feedback and suggestions.  Do you have any feedback about the Halloween Howl and how we can make it better for next year or what you liked about it this year?  If you are not able to come to the next meeting and want to contribute ideas please email them to us or drop a note in the council box in the office and we can bring them forward to the meeting.
