Thank you to everyone who volunteered to join School Council. So far, we have 12 volunteers for the 50 available spots, so there's no need for an election and there's plenty of room for more volunteers.
If you haven't yet sent in your form, please do so as soon as you can and please join us at the first meeting of the year, Wednesday Sept 19 at 7:00pm in the staff room. Childcare will be provided in the gym.
Welcome to the blog of the Clairlea P.S. School Council. Here, you will find unofficial meeting highlights, information and discussion about our school. Thank you for joining us!

School Council nomination forms due Monday
Download and print |
For those parents interested in joining School Council -
If you haven't already put in your self-nomination form for School Council, please do so by 3:15pm on Monday, September 10.
Please don't put the forms in the brown manila envelopes with the rest of the school paperwork. For privacy reasons, we can't open those envelopes, so we won't receive your nomination in time! Nominations will be processed after school on Sept 10.
If you did include your form in the brown manila envelope, never fear: just download the nomination form and send it in again, or email it.

School Council Elections
Hello! I hope you have had a wonderful summer. How could this be the final week of summer holidays already?
This is an invitation to join School Council this year. Several seasoned and hard-working members recently retired, so we need lots of new ideas and energy on School Council, as well as diverse perspectives on our school system. I hope we can count on you to (re)join and help us support the staff and students at Clairlea.
Nomination forms will go home on the first day of school. There are 50 spots available on School Council, so chances are we won't need to hold an election for voting member positions, but just in case, please click here for the election procedures. It's very important that we receive your self-nomination by Monday September 10 at 3:15pm, because nominations will be processed that afternoon. A list of nominees will be posted in the school and on the blog on Tuesday September 11.
The first meeting of School Council will be Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00pm at the school. Elections for officer positions (chair, vice chair, fundraising chair, treasurer and secretary) will be held at that meeting.
Enjoy the final week of summer holidays!

Education and the provincial election
People for Education has put out a list of 10 questions you can ask provincial election candidates about education.
You can ask about:
- standardized testing (EQAO) and other ways to measure success
- special education funding
- school fundraising (some schools can raise more than others - is this fair?)
- school libraries vs. computer labs
- all-day kindergarten
- whether the schools have a role in addressing childhood obesity
Have a look. Whatever your opinion, your questions will demonstrate that education matters to you.
Election day is October 6.

Education-focused all-candidates meeting: Sept 20
The Ontario Public School Boards' Association has designated Sept 20 as Education Day - a day when we can ask questions and learn the views of our local candidates for the Ontario election.
- If you're in Scarborough Southwest, your meeting is at Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute (large auditorium) on Sept 20 at 6:00 p.m.
- If you're in Beaches-East York, your meeting is at Secord P.S. (in the gym) on Sept 20 at 7:00 p.m.
That should cover most Clairlea families, but if you're in a different riding, consult this list for the location of your local meeting.
Education matters. The Ontario government directs it. For the sake of our children, please attend these meetings and ask smart questions that show that you will vote for a candidate who shares your vision for Ontario's education system.
You can also read the Ontario Liberal Party's platform, the Ontario PC Party's education platform, the Ontario NDP's policy page and the Green Party of Ontario's platform.
